Independence Day weekend will be the busiest weekend of the year for the Humane Society. Why is that? Well, quite simply put – animals are afraid of fireworks. Families across the country will be excited to celebrate this Independence Day, but pets are easily frightened and tend to want to run away from them. We are asking the public to please keep all of their pets indoors. Even pets that normally do not try and escape the backyard will find a way to get away from scary noises.
If your pet has fireworks fear, try to stay at home with him, if at all possible. If your dog is crate-trained, it will likely retreat to its crate during this time of stress. If your pet is not crate-trained, help him get settled in his ‘safe spot’ well before the fireworks start. If you must leave the house, try turning on the stereo or television to provide some distraction for your dog. Soothing classical music often works well.
Should your pet run away, report it to the Humane Society and look in our kennels, as soon as possible. Remember, the best and fastest way to a reunion is through your dog’s license. If your dog is more than four months old, make sure that it has a current license. If you find a stray, approach it with caution; if it’s friendly, try to contain it in your yard and check for tags. You can look up a license tag just by calling (719) 473-1741; if you can’t bring a stray to the shelter, but can contain it, an Animal Welfare Officer can pick it up from you.
